Chinese New Year, Non-Halal
The last visit to Hugo Kitchen with Chiefeater VK left an impression. This CNY we decided to have one (of many) of our meals here. Having had a few CNY sets around town- we were looking forward the more unique once a year type delicacies - such as the waxed rice.
And this was the best dish. Hugo’s waxed concoction was even better than Noble Houses’ in our opinion. If it wasn’t the last dish in the medley, we would have wolfed it down too quickly. The fact it was the last dish - even when we’re so stuffed - we still lapped it all up. Definitely 8/10
Chiefeater Susan ordered something outside the package - and it was the chicken rice. This was easily 7.5/10 paired with their irresistible ginger scallion sauce. Not sure if we liked the chicken or the sauce more.
The lobster truffle noodles were pretty unique as well. The crunch of the lobsters was top notch. You could (almost) eat the entire lobster, shell-on. Definitely one of the benefits of the spiny lobster vs Boston lobster. This would also be 7.5/10.
The other big hit with the family was the four seasons right at the start- the pork jowl and curried squid were exquisite. Specifically for me the curried squid. This dish was also 7.5/10
The rest of the dishes were also very good - such as the old faithful, steamed soon hock. This was a big fish at 1.4kg. I’ve had slightly better versions so this was 7/10 for me - but Chiefeater William single handedly ‘smashed’ almost the entire fish.
Hugo Kitchen is a consistent 7/10. Prices are reasonable too. I like the grittiness of his cooking - the small details eg the purple dragonfruit jus on a low sugar version fruit salad.
