Fried Chicken, Halal
We decided to do a food delivery shootout between A&W Spicy Golden Aroma Chicken and the KFC Spicy Fried Chicken. Both are staples of their respective fast food chains. We ordered both though a food delivery app. The A&W was ordered first followed by the KFC 10 minutes later since the KFC store is closer to home. The timing was perfect as both chicken sets arrived within 5 minutes of each other.
Now on to the food. Let’s start with the exterior. The KFC chicken had noticeably crispier skin that was well seasoned. It had a nice crunch to each bite. The A&W chicken’s coating wasn’t quite as crisp. The meats of both birds were moist and tender. I would give a slight edge to KFC in terms of meat texture quality for being slightly firmer to the bite.
When it came to flavour, the A&W was clearly the winner. It had a great balance of spice and savouriness from the aromatic coating. Each bite left a lingering flavour on my palate well after swallowing. The KFC tasted good but was rather plain and one-dimensional in comparison.
KFC gets points for its signature crispy coating, the A&W chicken is the champion here with its bolder, more complex seasoning and better moisture levels. It left us more satisfied at the end. For a fast food fried chicken fix, I’ll be returning to A&W more often after this face-off of finger lickin’ fowl.
And this is despite KFC earning extra points for adding in an extra piece of chicken for my 3 piece box to make up for the small drumstick.
You can see the spicier look of the A&W chicken at the bottom compared to the KFC on top.

I enjoyed both chickens with a refreshing Erdinger Dunkel. Its notes of chocolate and toast complemented both meals nicely.
