Chinese, Fried Rice, Non-Halal
I ordered several dishes for lunch from Crab B Restaurant via food delivery and among them was a petai fried rice.

The stir fried vegetables was good.

The lemon chicken was surprisingly bland.

What stood out about the Petai Fried Rice immediately was the rich wok hei, that coveted smoky essence that transforms a simple fried rice into something special. The rice itself was beautifully seasoned, with just the right amount of saltiness and umami to keep the flavours vibrant without overpowering the natural taste of the ingredients. The petai, or stink beans, were present but could have been more potent in terms of their characteristic bitterness and sharpness. This is likely due to the supply or seasonality of petai, which can vary. However, the mildness didn’t detract too much from the enjoyment of the dish.

One of the things I appreciate about petai is its health benefits. This unique bean is rich in fibre and antioxidants, helping to detoxify the body and improve digestion. It’s also known for its ability to reduce blood pressure, and it contains a good amount of natural proteins, making it a healthy addition to the dish. While petai can be an acquired taste due to its pungency, those who love it know that it brings a lot more than just flavour to the table – it’s a nutritional powerhouse.
In the end, despite the petai being a little milder than I would have liked, I thoroughly enjoyed the dish. The well-cooked rice and seasoning still made it a worthwhile option, especially if you’re looking for a fried rice with a little more personality than the standard fare.
