Chiefeater Andy Ng and his family had a rather sumptuous brunch at Goon Wah Restaurant in Taman Kuchai Jaya
Toast, Non-Halal
LI Restaurant, the forerunner eatery that eventually led to the establishment of Provisions, has always had a special place for me, especially for their signature Pork Toast—a dish that draws inspiration from the classic Malaysian Roti Babi and elevates it with modern techniques.
For some background, Roti Babi is a beloved street food in Malaysia, traditionally made by stuffing white bread with pork, then coating it in egg before frying. It’s a dish often associated with nostalgic flavours, typically served in old-school kopitiams or made lovingly at home. The dish has its roots in Hainanese culinary traditions and holds a certain charm with me.
At LI Restaurant, the team—trained in Melbourne—brings their experience and expertise to give this humble dish a modern twist. Their Pork Toast takes the essence of Roti Babi but reimagines it for a contemporary audience. Instead of the usual minced pork filling, the meat is finely processed into a smooth paste, spread generously onto toast, and then fried to crispy perfection. What you end up with is a crunchy exterior that gives way to a savoury and rich centre, packed with flavour. The toast comes with a side of sauce, but I prefer it without it.
Priced at RM20, this isn’t your typical kopitiam snack, but rather an elevated, premium interpretation of Roti Babi. If you're looking for a bite of nostalgia with a refined touch, the Pork Toast at Li is an excellent choice. A lovely balance of tradition and innovation, all wrapped up in one delicious, crunchy package.
And it pairs well with a white wine (like a Pinot Gris), which you won't get as an option in a kopitiam.
