Lo Chan Kee Wantan Mee
Wantan Mee, Street Food
Chiefeater Luke Soon savoured a traditional Cantonese wantan mee with lean char siew at Lo Chan Kee in Holland Drive

Chinese, Non-Halal
Searching for a quick bite near the Sungai Besi LRT station led me to Jiawei House. The restaurant seemed unassuming enough, but unfortunately, the meal proved to be rather uneven. I opted for the clams in yellow wine, the Cantonese fried sang mee, and a side of stir-fried vegetables.
The clams in yellow wine (RM24) were my first disappointment. They were surprisingly small – almost comically so – and the sauce leaned far too heavily on the sweet side. It lacked any real depth or savory complexity that I typically associate with this dish, leaving it feeling unbalanced.

Next up was the Cantonese fried sang mee (RM10). Sadly, this fared even worse. The noodles themselves were cooked adequately, but the overall flavor profile was incredibly bland. There seemed to be a distinct lack of seasoning; it needed a serious boost of something – soy sauce, perhaps, or some umami-rich ingredients.

Thankfully, things took a turn for the better with the stir-fried vegetables (RM16). These were genuinely enjoyable – crisp and crunchy, with a simple but effective garlic flavor that wasn’t overpowering. The beans retained a lovely snap, and it was easily the highlight of the meal.

Jiawei House clearly has potential, but based on this experience, consistency seems to be an issue. While the vegetables offered a small redemption, the underwhelming clams and bland noodles left me feeling less than satisfied. With some adjustments to their recipes, they could improve the overall dining experience.
