Durian
Durian season means it’s time to indulge, and this round, I ordered a few variants from Rizky Durian. The delivery arrived promptly, with each pack sealed and chilled, making it easy to dive straight into the creamy goodness.
We had three types to sample — the D101, Kawin Kampung and Udang Merah from Johor.
D101 (500g – RM80)
Thick, golden-yellow flesh with a firm, custard-like texture. D101 is known for its balanced profile which is mildly sweet with a subtle bitterness.
Udang Merah (300g – RM60)
This was the priciest of the lot by weight, and understandably so. The flesh was richly creamy with a stronger, more complex flavour. It was sweet at first but finished with a hint of pleasant bitterness. Named for its slight reddish hue, Udang Merah is prized for its deep, lingering taste and velvety texture.
Kawin Kampung (300g – RM30)
Despite being the most affordable, the Kawin Kampung surprised us. This variant, typically a mix of local kampung durian trees that have cross-pollinated naturally (“kahwin” meaning “married”), delivered good flavour. Less refined in texture and taste compared to the hybrids, but it had charm — a little wild, a little unexpected, and still delicious in its own right.
All in, a solid durian indulgence. Kawin Kampung punched above its price point, and Udang Merah gave us that rich, satisfying hit. D101 remained a dependable middle ground. If you’re curious about trying a spread without splurging all the way on Musang King, this trio from Rizky Durian was a good way to explore.
