Hainanese, Pork-Free
Walking into Hainan Joy Cafe felt like stepping into a time capsule from the 1980s. The ambiance transported me to the air-conditioned restaurants of yesteryear, with its nostalgic charm setting the perfect tone for a meal steeped in tradition. As I browsed the menu, it was clear that this was a haven for Hainanese classics, and I knew I had to try the Hainanese Chicken Chop.
Served with a mushroom sauce rather than the traditional Worcestershire-based version, the chicken chop was a pleasant surprise. The chicken was perfectly fried, with a golden, crispy exterior that gave way to tender, well-seasoned meat. Accompanied by mushroom slices, an egg, baked beans, and fries, the dish was a complete and satisfying meal. At just RM15, this chicken chop is arguably one of the best deals in PJ, offering both value and taste in spades.
Curious to see how their chicken rice would fare, I ordered a chicken breast rice for RM10.50. The chicken was flavorful, complemented by a delicious garlic and chili sauce, and came with a bowl of soup on the side. However, the rice didn’t quite live up to expectations, it lacked the fragrant aroma that is the hallmark of a great chicken rice, which was a slight letdown.
Kopi
Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Hainan Joy Cafe. The retro setting, combined with the comforting flavors of Hainanese cuisine, made for a memorable dining experience that I wouldn’t hesitate to revisit
