Birthday Mee, Street Food, Non-Halal
Almost 60 percent of Jin Café customers are here for their famous char koay teow but I must confess that I have not eaten yet. Moreover I have CKT only twice a year so I’m a bit particular of where I gonna eat. I was here for Ah Seng Fukui Mee.
Everyone know parking around this area is never easy so I usually come early. And for only one particular breakfast I’m here for. It’s “Fukui Mee” which is quite similar to birthday mee or lam mee. Lam Mee is available all over the island but for Fukui Mee or Birthday Mee is almost none!

The name “Birthday Mee” comes from the tradition of serving this dish during birthday celebrations, especially in Chinese households. Birthday Mee typically consists of yellow noodles, stir-fried with an assortment of ingredients such as chicken, pork, seafood, and vegetables. The specific ingredients can vary depending on personal preferences and availability. Common additions include slices of chicken or pork, shrimp, squid, fish cake, cabbage, carrots, and bean sprouts.
The dish is often prepared with a flavourful sauce made from soy sauce, oyster sauce, and other seasonings. It’s common for the noodles to be seasoned with a slightly sweeter sauce compared to other noodle dishes in Penang. The stir-fried ingredients and sauce are mixed with the noodles, resulting in a tasty and satisfying meal.
The tradition of serving Birthday Mee during birthdays is believed to bring good luck and symbolize longevity and prosperity. It’s a popular choice for birthday meals in Penang, and you can find it at various hawker centres, food stalls, and Chinese restaurants throughout the city.
