It was steaks and fries for this year's reunion dinner at Maria's Steakcafe 1 Powerhouse. My mother refused to cook and only wanted to eat out. And she didn't want Chinese restaurants as it will have been a rushed experience and possibly less than good. So we chose a western restaurant. We got to eat at our relaxed pace.
It wasn't the first time that I've tried Maria's. I remember having their grass fed tenderloin at their KLCC branch. It was memorable. Our starters consist of two plates of Caesar salad and fries each. The salad came with some walnuts and that was a nice touch. I especially like the "skin on fries". Crispy on the outside and flavourful. Next was their NZ mussel in a slightly spicy tomato based sauce. The mussels were a bit rubbery. Luckily the sauce saved it from being a total dud. It was appropriately served with some garlic bread. I was definitely clamouring for more after the starters were promptly devoured.
This time I chose black Angus strip loin at medium for my mains. My mother had lamb cutlets while my elder brother had their signature honey mustard chicken. My nephew went for the black pepper chicken. Both my younger brother and his wife went for the grass fed strip loin and grass fed tenderloin respectively.
All of us had no complaints at all with our choices. The meat was grilled to perfection with a slight reddish hue and minimum sight of the blood. The medium rare steak had a brighter red appearance. Most importantly, it wasn't dry to the taste and was totally flavourful with that natural beef umami flavour. Just a dash of salt was needed to really bring out the full potential of the cut.
Situated at the Sky floor of 1Powerhouse building, Maria's Steakcafe has made it another memorable dinner as we were sat next to the windows.
