I had read about Restaurant Teochew Lao Er through a review by Chiefeater Benjamin Lian but it was only recently that I made my way there for a meal. Their Michelin Select rating also helped me with this decision. The stars seemed to align when a parking spot materialized right in front of the restaurant, setting the stage for an exceptional dining experience.
Our initial selection of duck breast, duck wings, pork belly, pig ears, pig intestines, red stewed tofu would usually be served separately. However, we asked if they could present it to us in a single platter. And surprisingly they did! Look at how it's laid out below. Talk about going the extra mile!
The Sour Spicy Leaf Soup or Chai Boey was a flavourful adventure with a kick, setting our taste buds ablaze in the best possible way. This was my favourite dish.
The Stir-Fried French Bean with Fungus and Minced Pork was a crunchy delight, perfectly seasoned and a refreshing complement to the heartier dishes.
Steamed Buns with Mui Choy & Red Stewed Duck with the steamed buns was a delight to eat with the salty vegetables complementing the savoury taste of the duck.
The meal was a symphony of textures and flavours, showcasing the culinary prowess of Teochew cuisine. The only item amiss was perhaps the duck wings. It leaned a tad towards toughness, though it was very well seasoned.
Because a celebration isn't complete without a sweet finale, we indulged in Teochew desserts of Beng Kueh, Ang Ku Kueh and Qi Ka Kueh.
With a final bill of RM155 for three, Restaurant Teochew Lao Er proved to be not just a Michelin gem but also a budget-friendly culinary haven. Each ringgit felt well-invested in an evening filled with delectable wonders.
