Seafood, Chinese, Non-Halal
Restoran 88 off Jalan Kuchai Lama is a place that I have heard of for a long time but had never patronised. That’s until Chiefeater AnthonyS remedied that. He invited me to tag along with his partners and his family for this delightful dinner. His family has been a regular patron of this place since years ago. They even have a preferred table there! There are many restaurants with the same name, but this is the definitive one.
We started off with a crab porridge which is not often available at Restoran 88. When they tell you it's available, you order it! The porridge had a refreshingly sweet seafood flavour to it.

This was followed by a steamed soon hock which they will parade and weigh it before you. That’s them showing us the fish at the start of the meal. I don't often eat fish. My mantra is that fish are friend not food. But that night, I made the fish an enemy.

Then came a steamed free range chicken grown at the restaurant’s own farm. Yes, they have their own farm to rear their own chickens. This reminds me of Dan Barber's Blue Hill restaurant where the livestock and poultry grows on their own farm. They ensure that the chicken has matured to an appropriate age without the use of growth hormones. Free range chickens tend to have more flavour as they have more muscle. That was evident in this dish.

A braised pork leg. I was honestly quite stuffed at this stage.

Rounding off with an ABC.

While the food was good and the meal was enjoyable, it could not beat the star of Restoran 88. That is their front of house service. More than capably handled by the lady boss, Alice. Her description of the dishes and the preparation of sauces made that the highlight of the evening.
