Prawn Noodles, Non-Halal
River South Hoe Nam Prawn Noodles has been raved by many media outlets for the longest time and is loved by many locals, hence this place located in the heart of Potong Pasir gets quite crowded during meal times.
Chiefeater Susan was in town sampling local delicacies - and prawn noodles is a must try. River South Hoe Nam Prawn Noodles will definitely not disappoint with their extensive menu of prawn noodles, from their classic bowls like the Big Prawns And Pork Rib Noodle Bowl, to even Small Prawns And Pork Rib Noodle Bowl.
This prawn noodle stall alone is a good enough reason to warrant a visit to the Potong Pasir neighbourhood. Reputed for serving some of the best prawn noodles in Singapore, River South (Hoe Nam) has been around for more than five decades, and it’s easy to see why they continue to draw snaking crowds – their broth is one of the best we’ve tried.
Prepared with prawn heads and shells and simmered with pork ribs for more than 8 hours, the broth is rich and full of umami flavours. The pork ribs big prawn noodles (from SGD9.70) is a must-try – we prefer the dry version (with the soup served separately), featuring fresh and plump prawns and tender ribs served atop a bed of noodles tossed in their house made chilli sauce. Other popular offerings include the small prawn pig’s tails noodles (from SGD9.70) and the baby abalone big prawn noodles (from SGD18.70).
This is another dish (like bkt, ckt) that’s undeniably different on both sides of the causeway. For starters, the prawns here are always the ‘large’ variant. Then there’s the obvious addition of pork - it could be premium spare ribs or even tails. As you can imagine, the taste profile of the broth becomes different (vs just using prawn shells).
I’ve had Hoe Nam before in the past 2 decades here, and I can say they’re pretty consistent. By that I mean it’s always a solid 7/10 throughout, rain or shine.
